The craniocervical transition region includes C0-C1-C2 vertebrae and anatomically differs from other structures of the spine (brainstem, spinal cord, cranial nerves and vertebral artery). Therefore, it differs in surgical applications. Since the craniocervical region surrounds serious anatomical structures, 3D CT and MRI examinations are important to avoid or minimize serious neurological and vascular injuries during surgery. C0-C1-C2 posterior stabilization techniques will be discussed in this article.
