Progressive and irreversible degeneration occurs in the intervertebral disc as a result of a series of cellular and molecular events with aging. Despite intensive research, attempts to reconstruct the intervertebral disc have not been fully successful. In this review, repair and regenerative strategies for intervertebral disc reconstruction, their current status, challenges ahead and possible future planning are discussed.
