Spinal deformities are characterized by pathological curvatures in the spine that cause serious consequences such as pain, functional loss and decreased quality of life. Deformities can be treated with conservative or with surgical methods. Surgical treatment usually uses fusion techniques that correct and/or stabilize the spine. However, classical fusion techniques can limit the mobility of the spine and cause stress increase in adjacent segments and increase revision surgery rates. Therefore, in recent years, dynamic stabilization systems have been developed that aim to correct the deformity while preserving the mobility of the spine. These systems aim to provide physiological loading of the spine, reduce fusion-related complications and provide better clinical outcomes. Many classifications have been created that classify spinal deformities and guide the treatment plan. Nowadays, there is a need to look at these classifications from a different perspective in the light of the new defined parameters and stabilization systems.
