Type I Chiari malformation is the most common congenital deformity of the craniovertebral junction (CVJ), defined by caudal displacement of the cerebellar tonsils below the foramen magnum. Its pathogenesis is not totally understood, although there are many theories. Here we discuss the clinical features, treatment methods and operative techniques for Type 1 Chiari malformations.
