Cervical spine injury is one of the most important causes of morbidity after trauma. Although neurological deficit is rare, these patients can be treated in a variety of ways, including prolonged bed rest, orthotic support or surgical stabilization. Clinical studies have shown that the majority of these injuries (stable fractures of the odontoid and fractures of the arcus of the atlas and axis) can be treated non-operatively. Orthoses used in conservative treatment are the Sterno-Oxipito-Mandibular Immobilizer (SOMI), the soft collar, the Miami J and Minerva cervical collar and the Halo-vest (cranio-thoracic orthosis).
