Intervertebral disc degeneration is defined as the progressive structural disorder of the intervertebral disc, which is one of the main causes of low back pain. Degeneration may develop as a result of cell senescence, which is affected by many factors such as inflammation, oxidative stress, mechanical stress, and genetics. Cell senescence is defined as the irreversible cessation of the cell cycle and the secretion of aging-related molecules. Elucidating this process is of great importance for developing treatment strategies targeting cell aging. The results of some treatments developed in recent years seem promising.
