In intervertebral disc degeneration, apoptosis may play a role in the degradation of disc cells. Excessive apoptosis of disc cells contributes to loss of cellularity, leading to structural changes and degeneration. Since this process is a part of the complex mechanisms involved in the progression of degeneration, the topic of apoptosis is popular among recent pharmacoregenerative research. In this review, it was aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of intervertebral disc degeneration associated with apoptosis.
