Among the potential strategies for the treatment of disc degeneration, different pharmacomolecular signaling pathways have been targeted and various pharmacobiological agents have been tested in the manipulation of these pathways. Pyroptosis, a programmed cell death mechanism that has just begun to be focused on, resulting in the rupture of the cell membrane and triggering an inflammatory response, has taken its place among the targets. Studies have suggested that pyroptosis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of disc degeneration and that this process may be a potential target against degeneration. In this study, it was aimed to compile the importance of pyroptosis in intervertebral disc degeneration, the mechanisms by which it may contribute to degeneration, and treatment strategies.
