Lumbar disc herniation, which means degeneration and hernia formation of the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc of the lumbar spine, is one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions. It has a significant impact on society due to its frequency of occurrence and economic consequences. The main pathology responsible for low back pain due to lumbar disc pathologies is disc degeneration. Epidemiological studies report that 65-80% of the world population suffers from low back pain in any period of their lives. Although its etiology and pathogenesis are not yet known; youth-middle age, male gender, familial predisposition, environmental factors, previous trauma, obesity and smoking are common risk factors. With aging, there are qualitative and quantitative changes in disc structure in the natural course of degeneration. Disc degeneration is a progressive process involving extrinsic, intrinsic and genetic factors. Despite the contribution of all these factors, it is accepted that the main event in disc degeneration is diffusion disorder.
