Mareljia paresthetica (MP) is a nerve impingement that can result in pain, paresthesia and sensory loss in the dermotomes of the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh, resulting from the entrapment of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFC) fibers. It is a clinical condition that causes pain and numbness in the outer part of the thigh. It is also called Bernhardt-Roth syndrome. The reason for the entrapment is that the nerve folds and compresses while passing under the inguinal ligament. Narrow clothing, hip surgery, corsets, orthoses, pregnancy, obesity may cause LFC injury. In patients with increased lumbar lordosis due to obesity or pregnancy, entrapment neuropathy of this nerve is common. This problem usually resolves spontaneously or with physical therapy. In some cases, spontaneous recovery occurs. Analgesics are used to control pain. Weight loss and strengthening of the abdominal muscles are beneficial. Injection of corticosteroids and local anesthetics from the lateral part of the inguinal ligament provides relief. If symptoms recur, physical therapy modalities may be applied. In the event of persistent complaints, decompression surgery may rarely be necessary.
